Vancouver: The Secret is (Almost) Out

Dan Rather is in town, doing a story:

But we’ve made it more delicious for the journalists by, a) labelling ourselves “the best place on Earth”, b) constantly gloating about those surveys in The Economist that rate us the most livable city on the planet and, c) doing far too little for years to rescue the Downtown Eastside, an unfolding human tragedy in our midst.

. . . At the moment, the world’s meta-narrative for our fair city — and Canada by extension — is shaping up like this: Vancouver, a beautiful city with a dark and tragic secret.

I’ve written about our problem before, and I really hope this is the tipping point because the people here can’t take much more:

A Coast Mountain bus driver was swarmed and beaten by a group of youths on Halloween night after she stopped her bus to give out candies to trick-or-treaters.

Later her bus — a New Flyer worth $1 million — was set on fire as it sat parked on Commercial Drive near Napier Street.

The area where the attack took place is supposed to be a cool neighbourhood. And the “incidents” reported at the bottom of the article all took place in the heart of the West Side, where houses routinely sell for $2+ million. Also, word is that the Cafe at Opus Hotel — the playground of Hollywood stars — was also robbed at gunpoint.
